This oversized Wooden Big Five Ebony African Mask is handmade by the Shona artisans in Zimbabwe, South Africa.Hand engraved with the Big Five safari animals of Africa. The term “Big Five “refers to Africa’s most popular wildlife which is the lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, African elephant, and rhinoceros. These animals were called the big five animals by the big hunters of the last two centuries. They named them ‘Big Five’ animals as they were considered the most dangerous animals to hunt. This is because these animals fought back when they were being hunted.
The mask is set in the wonderful natural colors of the dark black/brown color of the Ebony wood and smooth polished in the natural black color of the wood. Ebony a very hardwood that makes for excellent carving and is one of the more expensive woods in Africa.
