This Lutsindzi Grass Basket is handwoven by the women artisans in Swaziland, Southern Africa. The weaving techniques are passed on from mother to daughter, preserving cultural integrity. Lutindzi grass is a sedge and grows in tufts in the cracks of rocks. Each blade grows in a sheath and pulls out easily when harvested so it does not damage the roots of the grass - which quickly regenerates and sends out more shoots. This strong grass has been used in Swaziland for hundreds of years to make ropes for tying down roofing thatch. The income generated from the purchase of these baskets helps the weavers support themselves and their families.

  • Handmade in Swaziland, South Africa
  • Ethically & sustainably handcrafted
  • Approximately 11" D x 3.5" H
  • Made from Lutsindzi Grass

Each basket is made by hand so there may be slight and subtle variations in size, color, or pattern. This is what makes it unique and a true piece of African art. The baskets are Fair Trade, and your purchase of these baskets will help provide a stable income and a good standard of living for the artists and their families. Each basket is individually made each unique with its own markings.
